little muscle flaps hardened around the muscle beating in her chest,
a refusal to let the music out for fear of being snubbed.

heart beat sounded silent, but wondering ears prickled at the sound, hearing what she thought was hidden.

even in the dark she knew.

you all see me, she said and blinked soft in the new light with blindfold between fingertips.

you all saw me the entire time.

rib cage shattered, she collected the pieces of her shocked self, bowing to the feet of kings and queens disrobed.

i am a fool, she said, i am nothing

and her heart melted into the soil, melding her to solidity instead of air.
